The world Loki hails from at first seems like your traditional swords and sorcery medieval fantasy realm.  And all the gods, angels, saints, and mythological figures are real, and every area and country seems to coorespond to our world.  However this isn't our ancient past, or an alternate reality.  It's the future.

You see humanity grew just a little too smart.  Project I.K.O.L. was created (an acronym mostly lost to the centuries by now).  A massive particle collider that ran in a two hundred mile loop.  Nowadays people call it the Wheel of Osheim, the place where every fairy tale is born.  When the engines started and it began to 'turn' they broke the laws of quantum physics and reality began to break.  This understandably freaked everyone out and that's when the nukes began to fly.  Centuries later this would be known as the Night of a Thousand Suns.

Some retreated to bunkers underground to escape and survive.  Others uploaded their minds to computers in order to survive the end.  Loki was originally one of these such 'data ghosts'.  His was the mind of one Dr. Lawrence O'Kee, the head of project I.K.O.L.

He adopted the persona of Loki, partly because of his name (L. O'Kee=Loki, it was his nickname back in his highschool and college days as well) and partly because being a 'trickster god; would suit his needs and personality.  He spoke to other data ghosts and encouraged and convinced a great many of them to also take upon roles from ancient mythology.  To become the gods of the new new world and guide the surviving remnants of humanity.  And that game sounded fun, so many of them went along with it, playing and acting their roles.  However all the beliefs of humanity, their dreams, prayers, and expectations twisted with the reality breaking magic of the still turning wheel.  This power seeped into the 'gods' and soon it erased their past, they forgot who they were, forgot they were even playing a game.  The lies they told of themselves becoming truths instead.

All but Loki.  His past is something vague for him, another life, remembered in shadows.  He never had all that many people praying to him to alter his memory too much.  After all no one REALLY likes Loki.

But it helped him.  He used the wrong magic of the wheel to create artifacts of power and set them into the world, weaving stories and myths around them.  They went from hand to hand, legends growing as the beliefs of people made them stronger.  All in hopes that one day one of them, a certain Key of Lies in particular, would achieve just the right amount of strength and fall into just the right pair of hands, to finally address the problem of the Wheel.
